Are Your Yes's Actually No's?

Do you feel like you need about 24 more hours in a day to get everything done? I don't think I've ever met someone that has said no to that question! I can't add hours to your day but I can share with you a simple nugget of wisdom that can help increase your productivity and help you waste less time.

Here it is: When you say yes to something, that means you are saying no to something else. Sounds obvious right?? Stop and think about it though. When you say yes to watching TV for an hour, that means you are saying no to spending quality time with your children. Or maybe it's saying no to going to bed on time, which in turn likely means a less patient mommy tomorrow.

I don't know what all you are saying yes to in your life right now. Often there are SO many good things to say yes to - kids clubs, sports, church events, gardening, community outreach...and the list goes on and on. As moms we want to say yes to all these good things. Yet we are constantly barely getting everything done. The house is a mess, we aren't getting as much done in school as we'd like to, our spouse feels like we never have time for him, and forget about personal time! But as is often the case in life, if we change our thinking, we can change our actions. And that's what this is all about!

Stop and think about your day for a moment. What have you said yes to today? Cleaning? Cooking? School? Yard work? Children's activities? Let's dig a little deeper...Watching TV? Reading the news? Reading status updates on social media? Aimlessly browsing Pinterest? When we say yes to the time waster items, we are saying no to the things that are truly important.

Isaac Newton's third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Although we're not talking about physics here, the law still applies. If I spend an hour reading the news, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The equal and opposite reaction is that I now have exactly one hour less to be productive today. We all want to be productive! We want to lay our heads down at night knowing that we fulfilled our duties for the day and we can now sleep peacefully because we have no regrets.

When I realized this simple concept it was a real eye-opener for me. Now when I am tempted to read the news or go on Facebook with no intentional purpose I stop and ask myself, "What am I saying no to right now?" Within seconds I can ALWAYS think of several other things that are far more important and necessary than what I was about to do. But just in case you REALLY can't think of even one important thing to do, just turn to your kids! Play a game, do a puzzle, go for a walk with your little ones. Kids can never have too much quality time with mom!

I challenge you to do some self-reflection today. Are your yes's truly worthy of your time? If they aren't, stop and ask yourself, "What am I saying no to?" The motivation to make better choices with your time will suddenly be clear. With that clarity you will be empowered to make better choices. Changing your thoughts will change your actions!
